The short answer
WooCommerce has its own MCP integration, built on the WordPress Abilities API and MCP Adapter. It is a developer preview, off by default, and its tools can create, update and delete products and change order status. Mitos is a hosted route, read-only by default: ChatGPT or Claude read products, orders, stock and a sales summary, without customer contact details, and change nothing unless an owner or admin allows it, with any price or stock change waiting for approval. Before you approve any MCP server, check its tool list, the WordPress user behind the application password and how you revoke access.
For the connection steps and the questions it answers, see how to connect WooCommerce to ChatGPT or Claude through Mitos.
Key points
- WooCommerce's MCP integration is a developer preview, and the feature stays off until a site admin turns it on.
- Its tools query products and orders, and also create, update and delete products, change order status and add order notes.
- Both routes sign in as a WordPress user with an application password, so that user's permissions set the limit.
- Mitos exposes read tools only by default: products, orders, stock, categories, a sales summary, and published posts and pages. Changes need permission and approval.
- You can revoke an application password on its own in WordPress, and revoke an AI assistant in Mitos within about a minute.
Two ways WooCommerce reaches an AI assistant
| What to compare | WooCommerce's own MCP integration | Mitos |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Developer preview, off by default | Available now, free to start |
| Where the AI assistant connects | The MCP Adapter on your site, through WP-CLI or a proxy running on your computer | A hosted address that ChatGPT or Claude add as a custom connector |
| Store tools | Query, create, update and delete products. Query orders, change status, add notes | Read products, orders, stock, categories and a sales summary. Changes only with permission and approval |
| Customer details | WooCommerce warns that order and customer operations may expose names, emails, addresses and payment details | Orders never include the customer's name, address, email or phone |
| Sign-in | A WordPress username and application password | One click: you approve on WordPress's own screen, and the application password made for Mitos is stored encrypted |
| Other sources | Abilities that other plugins register | Google Analytics and Search Console in the same organization |
What WooCommerce ships
WooCommerce includes an MCP (Model Context Protocol) integration that turns store operations into tools an AI assistant can call. WooCommerce's developer docs call it a developer preview whose APIs may change, and WooCommerce's source marks the feature as experimental and off by default.
It builds on two WordPress pieces. The Abilities API, available from WordPress 6.9, registers distinct units of functionality a site can perform. The MCP Adapter, which WooCommerce bundles and which also exists as a separate plugin, turns abilities marked public into MCP tools. WooCommerce's abilities cover:
- Products: query with filters, create, update and delete
- Orders: query with filters, update status and add notes
- An older WooCommerce MCP endpoint, now deprecated, with REST-based operations that include creating, updating and deleting products
WooCommerce tools that change your store
Several WooCommerce abilities write to the store, and in WooCommerce's source the delete product and update order status abilities are marked as not read-only and destructive. Every operation respects WooCommerce's permission system, so what a tool can do also depends on the WordPress user it runs as.
WooCommerce's docs describe connecting from Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and VS Code: through WP-CLI for a site on your own computer, or through a Node.js proxy running on your computer for a site on the internet. They advise testing thoroughly before you use it on a live store.
The Mitos route
Mitos does a different job: answering questions about the store. ChatGPT or Claude add one hosted address, https://mcp.sar-soft.com/mcp, as a custom connector. Mitos then calls the Mitos plugin's tools on your site, using an application password that WordPress creates for Mitos when you approve the connection, and that Mitos stores encrypted.
The plugin needs WordPress 6.0 or later and PHP 7.4 or later, and no other plugin. The AI assistant can read:
- Products with price, SKU and stock, and product categories
- Products running low on stock, measured against the shop's own low-stock setting
- Recent orders and single orders, with status, totals, dates, payment method and line items
- A sales summary: revenue, order count, average order value and best sellers, counted from orders that are processing, completed or on hold
- Published posts and pages with their text, and the plugin's status
What the Mitos connection does not read or do
Orders never include the customer's name, address, email or phone. The connection never sees or sets a password and never edits plugin or theme code. The following also applies:
- The connection is read-only by default. If an owner or admin allows changes, new content is created as a draft, prices, stock and publishing wait for a person's approval, in the chat where your AI assistant supports it, otherwise in Mitos, and every change is logged.
- One connection reads one store, inside one organization.
- Answers come from ChatGPT or Claude and can be wrong or incomplete, so check the totals that matter in WooCommerce.
What to check before you approve any WooCommerce MCP server
These checks apply to WooCommerce's own integration, to Mitos and to any other server that reaches your store:
- The tool list: sort the tools into read and write. Look for create, update, delete and status changes, and for a general tool that runs any ability by name, like the one on the MCP Adapter's default server.
- The WordPress user: requests run as the user behind the application password, so create a dedicated user with only the capabilities the tools need. The Mitos shop tools need a user who can manage WooCommerce, view WooCommerce reports or edit shop orders.
- Customer data: find out whether order tools return names, emails, addresses or payment details.
- Where the connection comes from: a Claude custom connector reaches the server from Anthropic's cloud, so the server must be reachable from the internet. A local proxy runs on your own computer.
- Revoking access: you can revoke an application password on its own from the user's profile in WordPress. In Mitos you can also revoke an AI assistant in the app, and it takes effect within about a minute.

Questions people ask
Does WooCommerce have an official MCP server?
Yes. WooCommerce includes an MCP integration built on the WordPress Abilities API and MCP Adapter. It is a developer preview and stays off until you turn the feature on.
Can Mitos change products, prices or orders?
Not unless you allow it. The connection is read-only by default. If an owner or admin allows changes, any change to prices or stock waits for a person's approval, in the chat where your AI assistant supports it, otherwise in Mitos, and is logged.
What do I need on my WordPress site?
The Mitos plugin, on WordPress 6.0 or later with PHP 7.4 or later, and a WordPress user who can see the shop's orders and reports and approves the connection. The requirements are listed below.
In the app the connection is called WordPress, and it works on a site without a shop too. It needs the Mitos plugin on the site, connected in one click from the Mitos app.
Which AI assistants can use it?
ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Code and Cursor. In ChatGPT and Claude you add the Mitos address as a custom connector (in ChatGPT, with developer mode turned on); in Claude Code and Cursor, as an MCP server. What each app needs is listed below.
- ChatGPTOn a Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu plan, on the web, with developer mode turned on.OpenAI's guide
- ClaudeOn any plan. Free allows one custom connector, and on Team and Enterprise an owner adds it first.Anthropic's guide
- Claude CodeClaude Code installed, with a Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise or Console account. The free Claude plan does not include Claude Code.Anthropic's guide
